Scarborough: Weather & Climate

It's reasonable to say that Scarborough sees its fair share of weather! From picture-perfect cloudless skies and warm sunshine in summer to biting North-Easterly's bringing snow showers in the winter, we see it all.
But in our opinion variety is the spice of life!
Many vistors are attracted to Scarborough for its temperate climate, the North Sea keeping the coast milder in winter but not too hot in the summer.
That's not to say we don't enjoy plenty of sunshine. Scarborough is one of the sunniest places in the UK, sheltered by the Pennines further west from the worst of the low pressure systems.
The record high temperature recorded in Scarborough is a very warm 33C and the average sea temperature in summer is a pleasant 15C. In 1970 it was 12.9C, a sign of climate change perhaps?
Having said that, in late December 1995 Scarborough was under an incredible 18 inches of snow! Northerly winds brought heavy snow showers down the east coast for days, whilst 20 miles inland there was just a dusting and 40 miles inland in York there wasn't any at all!
When we get an arctic blast in winter, Scarborough is prone to snow thanks to moisture being picked up in the North Sea and blown onto the exposed coastline.
